{"id":226,"date":"2009-04-07T08:23:08","date_gmt":"2009-04-07T15:23:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.poorluckyme.com\/blog\/?p=226"},"modified":"2025-05-23T17:33:52","modified_gmt":"2025-05-23T22:33:52","slug":"tuesday-april-7th","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.poorluckyme.com\/blog\/tuesday-april-7th\/","title":{"rendered":"Tuesday, April 7th"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dear Poor Lucky Me,<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m mad.\u00a0 I am a loyal NPR listener and supporter.\u00a0 Lately every time I tune in, it&#8217;s wall to wall bad news.\u00a0 It&#8217;s bullshit!\u00a0 I KNOW that there are some good things happening in the world.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve had it up to here with the bad economy and stupid Korean launching &#8220;satellites&#8221; and hippies protesting the Olympics.\u00a0 How is knowing this stuff going to help me be a confident consumer and a positive contributor to society?\u00a0 The way it is now, I feel like hiding in my basement and eating the supplies I stocked up on before New Years Eve 1999.<\/p>\n<p>What should I do to avoid the crushing depression brought on by the media? Don&#8217;t say &#8216;stop watching tv&#8217; because that&#8217;s just not an option.<\/p>\n<p>Love,<\/p>\n<p>Betrayed By Steve Insky For the Last Time<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dear Betrayed by Steve Insky,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I felt the same way!\u00a0 I donate $20 a month to NPR, which I think is more than fair considering how much I listen.\u00a0 It helps me seem smart.\u00a0 Anyway, last week I got sick and tired of all the gloom.\u00a0 It was like listening to an Evangelical service about hell.\u00a0 Even when they do personal interest stories now it&#8217;s about people who lost their jobs and have to scrounge around to pay their kid&#8217;s college tuition.\u00a0 Or worse: reports from the unemployment office where they interview the people who have been standing in six hour long lines.\u00a0 I was fed up and tried to find something else to listen to.\u00a0 After fifteen minutes of Eric and Kathy in the Morning, I stormed into my office and pounded out an angry email to <a href=\"mailto:%20membership@chicagopublicradio.org\" target=\"_blank\">membership@chicagopublicradio.org<\/a>. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I told them I would give them one week to start plugging in a little good news, or I&#8217;d be revoking my monthly pledge.\u00a0 I explained that if I wanted to hear bad news bullshit all day I could tune in to Rush Limbaugh or Bill O&#8217;Reilly.\u00a0 I challenged the notion that things were completely shit in this country, and accused them of getting on the bad-news-good-rating band wagon.\u00a0 I tried to be polite, but I was mad.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The next day I got in my car and turned on the radio.\u00a0 The first story on Morning Edition: &#8220;Has Spring Sprung for the Economy&#8221;.\u00a0 It was a report on how consumer confidence was up, auto sales and home sales were creeping up, and maybe things were on the mend.
